From Rx to OTC: Blister Packaging Innovation for a Leading Allergy Medication

New Packaging Development & Blister Innovation

Client Needs

A leading pharmaceutical company was switching its well-known allergy drug from prescription to over–the–counter (OTC). The switch was a strategy for revenue growth.

The Challenge

  • New CR packaging was required for the product which was high toxicity (classed as F=1)
  • The packaging needed to provide differentiation for the product
  • Looming possibility of patent expiration placed time constraints on the project

Our Approach

  • Worked with the client to develop new CR packaging for the moisture sensitive product
  • Developed the project plan to ensure objectives were met
  • Assisted with creating a patent application that was successfully granted
  • Managed the CR testing process to completion
  • Created a packaging format that was adopted over the entire manufacture network, consisting of six sites in a network of internally and externally owned locations

The Impact

  • Created a patent application that was successfully granted
  • New packaging was extended over entire manufacturing network

Value to Client

Enabled a smooth and strategic Rx-to-OTC switch by delivering a differentiated, moisture-resistant, child-resistant (CR) blister packaging solution under tight timelines.

Adept's support led to a granted packaging patent, accelerated market readiness ahead of patent expiration risk, and standardized the new format across six manufacturing sites, streamlining production and protecting revenue growth opportunities.
